Heavy rainfall is affecting several parts of India on August 24, 2026, with the IMD forecasting heavy to very heavy rain in parts of Odisha and rainfall in Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Sikkim and other regions. There is no nationwide school holiday, but some Odisha districts have announced closures following adverse weather conditions. Parents and students should check district administration and school notifications before travelling.

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Auto, Cab and School Van Drivers’ Unions had announced an indefinite strike from Monday, August 24 over a 14-point charter of demands.

About 20 students of the government primary school, who turned up for attending classes, were shifted to a vacant house situated nearby; the children were earlier studying in a cattle enclosure in unhygienic conditions; this was just a day after Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) activists were hounded out following their failed attempt to inspect the school
